Why God Made the Moon
Morning babies
piled up like fresh laundry, puffy and warm
vying for your attention.
For every spilled cup,
there is a small hand with dimples, reaching out,
yawning slow
like an ornery kitten,
and just as restless and ready for milk, learning just
how to get your attention.
Walmart tantrums
are calmed by goodnight talks about why God made the moon
and if He really hears us.
You are so tired, I know,
but you are changing a life, a generation, and the world
with every gentle shush.
It is alright to be sad
and deliriously happy at the same time. I think Jesus often
felt the same on earth.
Three word prayers
are just as holy as lofty poetry or ancient prose, especially when
you repeat them with faith.
Tomorrow is full
of too much to do and too little time but also dripping with
new mercies and everlasting love.
Set your mind on things
that do not perish, on what is above, while remembering to snuggle
deep those on earth.
It is no small thing
to get up each day and say yes to God. It is, indeed, the very step
that you must take.
The next step,
the next thing, the only way to live in the ghostly shadow of Eden, and
the promise of resurrection.
P.S. If you are a reader, would you say hello in the comments? I would love to get to know you. What is bringing you joy today?

Beautiful, Rachel. What's bringing me joy? Well, it's not the wind. Please stop. But... I've been productive today—writing, doing laundry, cleaning the house, etc.—which brings me joy. 😂
You can pluck the thread, Rachel. So refreshing.
